GAMPA Inauguration New Premises

The inauguration of GAMPA’s new premises took place on Tuesday 6thNovember. The Minister for Culture the Hon Steven Linares together with Minister for Education the Hon John Cortes officially opened the Academy by unveiling a plaque commemorating the event.

Members of the Department of Education, Technical Services, Ministry of Culture, Gibraltar Cultural Services and friends and supporters of the Academy attended the Opening and were given a tour of the building.

The newly renovated premises will allow GAMPA to have its over 300 students all under one roof. Previously, due to lack of space the acting, singing, instrumental and dance training all took place in different studios scattered around Gibraltar. For the first time, all the teaching, in all the performing disciplines can now take place in one location, making it easier for students and teachers.

The new premises located at 7 Hospital Hill comprises of four floors. There are two large studios, numerous practice rooms, a theory classroom, a recording studio and waiting and chill out areas full of beanbags for the students to relax whilst they wait for their classes to start.

From 3:30pm onwards the four floors are in constant use, with the sounds of piano, guitars, flutes and many more floating through this historic building. There is a real sense of art in the making and the atmosphere is of excited children climbing up and down the stairs, carrying their instruments or dance gear or their scripts busily chatting about their next project.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Academy’s Principle Christian Santos said: “ The opening of this new premises was a dream come true! I hope it will become a hub of creativity for children and adults alike.”

GAMPA would like to thank Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar for their support, especially Ministers Linares and Cortes without whom this vision would not have become a reality.
